From its earliest days, the
Christian church as always recognized that one of its major ministries is
the burial of its dead. In doing so, it proclaims that life and death are
united as components of a continuing process of growth. Death, although it
is real, is not the last word in a Christian's existence. We
trust in the Resurrection of our Lord to bring new life to the
deceased. In 1982 Mr. and Mrs. John E. Shanck gave to St. Mary's church its beautiful Memorial Garden in memory of their son, John E. Shanck, Jr. This makes it possible for St. Mary's to offer the burial of cremated remains to members and their families who would elect this form of Christian interment. The Episcopal Church believes that cremation is an appropriate means of laying a body to rest and a Memorial Garden of Church grounds is a fitting final resting place. It provides permanence and returns the Church to its ancient custom of providing a place for its departed. The Memorial Garden is a place where all of Christian life can be lived out. While it is a final resting place, it is also appropriate for other activities. Weddings, baptisms, worship, fellowship and quiet meditation are welcome there. In this way, the tie between the living and our departed members remains close and natural. When death comes to a member of your family, it is wise to contact Father Davis right away. He is ready to come immediately and be of assistance to you. As part of his pastoral ministry, he can help you consider all the alternatives in this time of sorrow and be of assistance in making your plans with a funeral director. The Garden is sacred ground and will be protected by the Diocese of Newark and St. Mary's. |
